SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Care
DESCRIPTION:Crestview Middle School \nThe mental health training outlines the way youth respond emotionally\, cognitively\, and behaviorally to overwhelming emotions. When we understand what changes happen in the brain and body when we become emotionally overwhelmed\, we can learn to self-correct in the moment. The training will demonstrate that behaviors are purposeful and a biological hardwiring for survival that cannot necessarily be changed but managed and fine-tuned. We also will discuss how abuse\, neglect\, and household dysfunction change our worldview and impact our ability to be rational and use reason\, logic\, morality\, and regulate our thoughts and emotions. We will provide practical tips and resources to help individuals learn to self-correct as well as how to regulate the environment while teaching others to self-correct.

SUMMARY:Suicide Awareness and Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Sperreng Middle School \nThe training begins with a discussion regarding stigma (i.e. discrimination\, prejudice) toward mental illness and suicide. We identify appropriate and inclusive language versus stigmatizing language. Information related to mental health\, emotional well-being\, and suicide prevention is provided as well as identification of issues that may lead to suicide including depression\, anxiety\, emotional dysregulation\, and drug/alcohol use. We will discuss the signs related to suicide and assist youth in determining if they or their peers are at risk for suicide. Youth are directed to not make promises of confidence when they are concerned about peer suicide. We conclude with a discussion about healthy\, effective coping skills to manage suicidal thoughts and offer community resources to provide a safety net for youth concerned about themselves or others experiencing suicidal thoughts. \nThis training meets Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education suicide prevention education for students guidelines.

SUMMARY:Spirituality and the Black Church
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally for people of color\, the church has and will always serve as a safe haven for African Americans\, a place to worship God together and a place where we are motivated to rebuild our communities. For too long\, mental health has been misunderstood or left out of the black community altogether. Angela Tate\, a minister and clinician\, will lead us in a conversation on combining spirituality and mental health. We hope you will join us for this Facebook live event! \n  \n
